The new £72 million Museum of Liverpool is the first 21st century public building in Liverpool and will be one of the world’s leading city history museums, setting the global benchmark for museums of its kind and raising social history as a museum discipline to an international scale. The museum will demonstrate Liverpool’s unique contribution to the world and will showcase popular culture while tackling social, historical and contemporary issues.
Rourkes Contract Division was awarded the structural glass balustrade and hand railing contract for all internal and external applications. Working closely with both the architect and the main contractor we developed the staircase handrail for the fantastic elliptical staircase which sweeps up through the centre of the building. It will be one of the first things visitors see when the museum opens.
With 3 internal service and fire escape staircases, each consisting of over 10 flights, we provided powder coated metal panel infill balustrade designed to comply with both the British Standard and Building Regulations.
Externally we designed, manufactured and installed the impressive
structural glass balustrade that runs over 440 metres on the north and south ramps, meeting the requirements of BS 6399 -1:1996 achieving a 3kN load. Completing the balustrade on the stepped and ramp areas and incorporating LED illumination into the handrail increasing both the safety and aesthetic appearance, all manufactured in 316 grade stainless steel.
